Sharp Releases New Line of Aquos LCD TVs

Sharp, based in Mahwah, N.J., today announced its new line of Aquos liquid crystal display TVs, the D64U series. According to a company press release, a re-engineered circuitry in the LCD panel and the elimination of certain parts allowed the creation of the thinnest large screen flat panel TV available.

The HD, 1080p line includes 65- , 52- , 46- and 42-inch screens. All but the 65-inch size will be available in August—MSRPs of $2,100 to $3,800 and the 65-inch screen will be available in September, with pricing for that model to be announced at that time.

Each model includes side and rear HTMI, component, and composite inputs, and the rear includes S-video, PC, and RS-232C inputs.

For more information, view the press release at www.sharpusa.com.

Battery Speculation

Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a new material that could allow the creation of extremely thin, flexible batteries. With carbon nanotubes, silicon, and cellulose, the researchers created a lithium-ion battery with a 110Ah/g capacity.

Prototypes would be able to power small mechanical devices like fans, but future applications might include batteries that fit neatly into strange shapes or wrapped around electronics inside a device. Flexible cell phones, anyone?
